Artist’s Statement I strive to create simple, but compelling images in such a way that we see the commonplace anew. I often choose “simple” scenes that when drawn or painted will leave room for the play of the materials, in most cases soft pastels, sometimes acrylic or oil paint. I also look for lighting conditions—seasons, times of day, etc., that might have emotional appeal. Choosing the right scene also involves assessing the formal elements within the scene so that the finished composition has something graphically compelling about it. Using a camera to capture a view has been a very helpful part of my process. After I photograph a scene, I work with the image in the computer to bring out what seem to be the most appealing qualities of that view, letting my responses interpret the image as well. Bio I received my first oil painting lessons as a young girl from my artist grandmother. Later, I enrolled in art classes at Santa Barbara City College, planning to go on to UCSB when I finished up. But I got distracted by weaving and clothing design, and instead opened a weaving design studio in Sacramento. My work was featured in publications, on television and in motion pictures. After 25 years of maintaining a handweaving and clothing design business I needed a change. So, in the last 4 years I have returned to my long-held dream of painting and drawing.
